In 2002
The Ural Nonproliferation Group (UNG) started education and research in the areas of nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament in cooperation with PIR Center (Russia), the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (Monterey, the USA).
It is housed in the Resource Center created within the scope of the TEMPUS project "Human Security (environment, quality of food, public health, and society) on territories contaminated by radioactive agents".

Besides teaching Ekaterina Mikhaylenko also supervises students’ scientific activity on the issues of nonproliferation: history of nonproliferation regime, regional aspects of nonproliferation. Has more than 20 publications, published both in English and Russian, on the NPT negotiation process.
